Anthropology is a very young discipline that has been growing in its popularity in the twenty first century due to its people-centric, down to earth and bicultural research approaches. Anthropology is defined as the study of human beings in time and space, exploring both current biological and cultural diversity as well as the prehistoric events leading to it. It is because of its holistic and field centric approach that anthropological approaches have become very popular among other biological and social sciences. Anthropological methods and principles are becoming vital in the glocal world order, applications in areas such as forensic science, sports, designing, management, marketing, human resource development, rural development and policy planning, are providing immense employment opportunities for young people. In 2018, when Government Degree College Shopian started Bachelors course in anthropology, it became the very first educational Institution In entire J&K state to offer courses in anthropology. A separate department of anthropology in GDC Shopian was established in 2018. The department has recently installed a physical anthropology laboratory and a much-enriched anthropology library. The department aims at nurturing young graduate students for appreciating the diversity and variety in the cultural, linguistic and biological elements of the J&K population in particular and of South Asia in general. The ethnographic exploration of the Kashmiri population which also includes many peripheral tribal communities remains a blank spot in the anthropological literature of south Asia. Therefore the beginning of anthropological teaching in Kashmir may be labelled as a historical turn in the development of people-centric literature in Kashmir.
