The Department of Sociology, one of the largest departments in the GDC Shopian, with eight (08) teaching faculty catering to more than three thousand students across various semesters, was established in the year 2005.

Since its establishment the department has made remarkable progress in terms of the ever increasing roll of students and students making it to various universities in the state and elsewhere besides securing jobs in public and private sectors.

More than 40 students from the department have cracked the prestigious Kashmir Univeristy Entrance Exam over last three academic years making it the highest number of students qualifying for PG programs in any subject from the college.

The department has been organizing seminars, symposia in addition to regular field study tours to give the students firsthand experience of the social set up that surrounds them and to expose them to the real social situations where they are able to use their knowledge of the subject.

The department got its first regular teaching faculty, Mr. Shahnawaz Ahmad, in the year 2017 who is looking after the department since  then.
